Go to top of the page Q:  How do I place a link on my site that points back to Gulfislands.com?

A:  Please follow the instructions by clicking here.

Go to top of the page Q:  How do I tell how many bytes my page is?

A:  You can determine how large a page is by adding up the total bytes of the html document, graphics and any other components than may be included on the page.  If a graphic appears more than once on a page only count it's size once.

i.e. this page
web_hosting_faq.htm = 24,081 bytes
support.jpg = 1,270 bytes
top.gif (16 of them at 377 per3)  = 377 bytes
total size of the page = 25,728 bytes

Go to top of the page Q:  I am a web developer with a customer's web on your server.  How can I get permission to update my customer's web?

A:  In order to get access to a web site on one of our servers you must first have access to the username and password of one of our customers.  If you are one of our customers you're half-way there.

If the web site owner is in the process of setting up their web site they must complete the active your web space form.  This form has a field where the owner can specify the usernames of those individuals who will be maintaining the site.  If you have an account on our system have the owner add your username here.  If this form has already been completed have the owner e-mail the web producer with the username of the individual(s), that they wish to be granted access to their web site.

If you are not a customer of ours you will need to get the owner of the site to give you a valid username and password which has already been granted administrative access to the site.

Go to top of the page Q:  I am unable to view my page on the server.  The error returned is:
HTTP Error 404
404 Not Found
The Web server cannot find the file or script you asked for.  Please check the URL to ensure that the path is correct.
Please contact the server's administrator if this problem persists.

A:  This error typically means that an incorrect web site address has been entered or that the file being requested does not exist.  Double check the address that you entered and re-enter it including the actual name of the file that you wish to view.

The full address of your web site will be of the following format:
http://your domain name/your folder name/your file name
(http://www.saltspring.com/smallshaw/islandpathways.html)

If the page comes up then you know you've got the right URL, but that you haven't named your home page correctly.

If this is the first page in your web site and you want it to be automatically displayed when someone enters you URL, it must have a file name of "index.html."  If you give the file any other name (islandpathways.html) it will not automatically be displayed by our web server and you will be required to include the entire web site URL in order to view the page
(http://www.saltspring.com/smallshaw/islandpathways.html.)

If you enter a web site address without a specific file name
(http://www.saltspring.com/test) the web server will attempt to load a file named "index.html."  This file is the default file automatically displayed by our web server, if no other file is specified.  For example, if you enter "http://www.gulfislands.com" in your web browser you will be greeted by our home page.  The reason that you don't have to enter anything else in the address bar is that our home page has a file name of "index.html," and is automatically displayed by our web server.  If you really wanted to you could also enter the complete address which is "http://www.gulfislands.com/index.html," but why bother if you don't have to.

Go to top of the page Q:  I would like to put a counter on my web site, what is the procedure?

A:  We currently do not support a counter of any sort on our system.  However, we can recommend two free services which provide considerably more, than just basic counting.

They are:  eXTReMe Tracking & HitBOX

Go to top of the page Q:  I've posted an html document in my web space, but can't seem to access it with a browser.  What needs to be done to access the file?

A:  As soon as an html document is posted to a personal web space it immediately becomes active.  If you are having difficulty viewing the newly posted document please - click here - for more information.

Go to top of the page Q:  In order to have my site come up in search engines, do I need to register it?

A:  As a number of the main search engines regularly index http://www.saltspring.com as well as http://www.gulfislands.com and all links found on it, you do not necessarily need to register your site with any search engines.  You will however, get the best exposure for your web site by personally registering it with the big five (www.yahoo.com, www.hotbot.com, altavista.digital.com, www.excite.com and www.infoseek.com.)

Go to top of the page Q:  In the web site statistics, what does Total hits made on server mean?

A:  A web page is built using many separate components.  Each component generates a Hit.  Therefore a single Page View may generate multiple Hits. Hits should not be considered when analyzing the performance of a web site.

Go to top of the page Q:  In the web site statistics, what does Total page view hits mean?

A:  Each time a web page is opened or viewed it is counted to be a Page View.  Typically, only one Page View per session is counted for each page viewed.

Go to top of the page Q:  In the web site statistics, what does Total sessions served mean?

A:  Every time an individual connects to a web site it is considered one session.  An individual may visit many pages within a web site, but all browsing is considered to be contained within in the one session.  If the same individual visits the same web site the next day, the individual is considered to be a new visitor and therefore starts a new session.

Go to top of the page Q:  My web site is larger the limit in my Web Hosting Plan, how much extra will it cost?
