E-Mail FAQ

Go to top of the page Q:  Can I have my e-mail delivered to both the Imagen server and have a copy forwarded to my mailbox on another server?

A:  Yes you can.  There are two choices for forwarding, the first is to have  your mail delivered locally and then have a copy forwarded to your other address.  The second option is to have none of your mail stored on our server, but instead have it automatically redirected to your new address.

If you wish to take advantage of either of these options, please email the postmaster with appropriate instructions.

Go to top of the page Q:  Every time I pickup my mail I get all my old messages plus whatever new ones there are.  How can I fix this?

A:  This is usually the result of an option called "leave mail on server."  You will need to check the settings of your e-mail program and make sure that you do not have this option selected.

Go to top of the page Q:  How do I check my e-mail remotely from another provider?

A:  There are two ways to check your mail remotely.  The easiest way is to use our web browser client.  In order to access your e-mail through the web navigate your browser to http://webmail.imagenisp.com.

The second way is to re-configure the mail program you will be using, to our server settings.  In order to re-configure the mail program you will need the following information.

Incoming Mail Server: mail.imagenisp.com
Outgoing Mail Server: mail.imagenisp.com
Username: your username
Password: your password
Go to top of the page Q: I am logging onto my mail account by dialing into another ISP.  I can retrieve my mail fine, but when I try to reply or send mail I get an error similar to "550 Relaying is Prohibited."   What can I do?

A:  In order to prevent our mail servers from be used as relay points for spammers, we conform to the industry standard of restricting relay access to only our customers.

The best solution is to configure your email software to use the outgoing mail server of the provider you're connecting to the Internet through.

Go to top of the page Q: I have lost my password for logging onto the e-mail server.  How can I find out what it is?

A:  99.9% of the time your e-mail password will be exactly the same as your dialup password.  Before contacting us about your password, please browse through this FAQ to see if your symptoms are solved anywhere else.  If you still think that you have the wrong password please see the following FAQ by - clicking here - for information on obtaining your password.

Go to top of the page Q:  I would like to have a second e-mail address.  How do I go about it?

A:  The first step in setting up a second e-mail address is to decide whether it is going to be a regular e-mail account or an alias?   If you wish to setup a regular e-mail account you will need to have a separate username and password specifically for the second address.

The second step is to configure your e-mail program to send and receive messages for the new account.  Since most e-mail software can only handle one e-mail account at a time you may need to install a second e-mail program.  In my opinion the easiest way to handle multiple e-mail accounts is to install and configure outlook express with multiple account.

Go to top of the page Q:  Outlook Express Error  "553 malformed address"

A:  Microsoft has posted a knowledge base articles which explain how to correct this error.  Basically the article says, do not have anything in front or after the e-mail address i.e.  <jsmith@saltspring.com> is wrong but jsmith@saltspring.com is okay

Please see the following article before continuing on to Microsoft

Go to top of the page Q:  Sometimes I get a bounced e-mail message, even though I've been corresponding with the address from my address book for some months.

A:  This is a problem that sometimes occurs and can usually be attributed to a problem with the mail server at the receiving end, or a problem with the internet in general.  This is usually not the result of a problem with our mail server or your computer.  If you are getting bounced messages from more than one address then there may be a problem that we can look at, if not wait at least a couple of hours before trying again.  If the problem persists for more than a day or two try contacting the recipient via other means as they may have changed their address, moved to another service, or know of a problem with their provider.

Go to top of the page Q:  What is an e-mail alias?

A:  An e-mail alias is an extra e-mail address attached to an existing mailbox.  With the usage of an alias you may have multiple e-mail addresses, without the need for a separate username and password for each address.  All of your mail is instead delivered to the one mailbox that you check on a regular basis.   E-mail aliases are a win win situation for anyone who has the need for multiple addresses.  By using an alias you will be able to lower the amount of the time required to check and respond to e-mail for multiple addresses.  The only downside to using an alias is that all replies will appear to come from one address, the one designated as the primary.

Advantages:

  • easiest way to retrieve mail for more than one address
  • use existing E-mail software, username and password
  • you do not need to change anything you're doing right now in order to accept mail destined for this extra address

Disadvantages:

  • all E-mail you send will show as coming from whichever address you have specified in your E-mail software as the reply to address
  • not a good solution if multiple people want to have completely separate E-mail
